Achievement Unlocked: 4 Years at Automattic

It flew by without me even noticing, but in February I passed my fourth year working for Automattic. It is now the longest I’ve worked for any company and I hope to continue working there for many more years to come. It has been an amazing experience so far, and here’s some of the reasons why:

A Distributed Workplace

Being allowed to work from anywhere in the world is really freeing. In fact, shortly after I started at Automattic my family moved overseas to Scotland for two years. Without that freedom we would never have had so many European adventures. I’m quite jealous of my single coworkers that travel a lot more than I can!

As a Dad of young children, I also really appreciate that I can be at home and be more involved with my kids’ day-to-day upbringing. If I were in an office I would be away from them ~10 hours everyday, which just doesn’t seem like the way it should be. This week it has been especially handy as my dear wife has had a stomach bug, and I’ve been able to be flexible with my work schedule and care for the kiddos while she rests up.

Amazing People

The people at Automattic are so great to work with. The culture is very positive and upbeat. I’ve never seen a group of people so good at writing puns ;)

I’m continually blown away by the great work that Automatticians produce. My personal favorite at the moment is Cloudup, check it out!

Challenging Work

As a developer, it is an amazing place to work. There’s always new challenges to overcome and l still learn new things everyday (TIL!). We do code reviews for all pull requests, and I’ve really enjoyed learning from others on my team on how they would solve a problem in an alternative way.

Speaking of challenges, I recently joined a new team! I’ve joined up with team Simperium, which is the sync tech that powers Simplenote. I sync I’m excited for this new adventure!

Travel

Part of working for Automattic is traveling to meetups. My team typically did two of these per year, and the entire company meets once per year as well. The cool part is that you can pick anywhere in the world you want to meet as long as it has decent internet access. We work hard at meetups, but still take some time to see the surroundings and participate in fun activities during the week.

Since starting at Automattic I’ve been to Seaside (Florida), Milan, Austin, Edinburgh, Zaragoza (Spain), Budapest, Chicago, San Diego, Greece, San Francisco/Santa Cruz and Tokyo. In a few weeks, I will have a meetup with my new team in Aruba! Queue Beach Boys music.

Join Up

I was employee number fifty-something when I joined Automattic, and today we are over 250 people! We are actively hiring, so apply today if you think you’ve got what it takes to be an Automattician! Just make sure to practice up on your puns.

As for my ‘Achievement Unlocked’ post title, I get to pick up one of these bad boys now that I’ve hit the four year mark:

The mobile team had our second meetup of the year in Anavyssos, Greece last week. It was one of my favorite team meetups so far. We rented a villa that had a ton of rooms as well as a bunch of fun stuff to do including a giant pool and bikes to ride around on. It was really hot but we managed OK. The Mobile Team is up to 12 now and is a great group to work and hang out with. My favorite part of the trip was when we took a day trip to Athens and a walk up to the Acropolis. Second favorite was sailing in the Mediterranean! Check out the pics:

I had an amazing week with Automattic in Budapest, Hungary. Lots of working, eating, outings and laughing! My favorite event was a visit to Széchenyi Medicinal Bath, where we bobbed in the natural hot springs for an afternoon. I left there relaxed and rejuvenated.

Here’s some photos! (mental note: make sure your camera is not set on ISO 1600 next time you’re on a photo walk)

WordPress for iOS 2.8 is Out!

0

We just hit the ‘Big Green Button’ on iTunes connect to release WordPress for iOS 2.8 to the masses! The biggies in this release are Stats and a really cool ‘Quick Photo’ feature. We’ve also worked with the WordPress translation community to localize the app in 10 languages.

Check out more details on the WordPress for iOS blog.

Mobile Meetup in Milan

2

My team at Automattic got together last week for a meetup in Milan. We worked hard on WordPress for iOS (Version 2.8 adds Stats, internationalization and a cool Quick Photo post feature!). When we weren’t working we wandered around the city streets, deciding where to eat or grab a beer (or two).

I found Milan to be quite nice, the food was tasty! I was a bit surprised at how much Graffiti was on the walls. Apparently that’s quite standard for most large European cities. The weather was nice, but apparently warmer in Glasgow and I missed out!

This weekend we’re going to actually tour Scotland a bit, including a B&B stay on the Isle of Skye. Our dear friends Beau and Bridget are just flying in now to go on the trip with us!

Here’s a bunch of iPhone shots I took throughout the week:

Tuesday Mornings With Dad

Tuesdays are a fun (yet busy) day for me. Sarah has a church staff meeting in the morning so Hazel and I typically head out for an outing around Glasgow. Today we hit Starbucks for a bag of Christmas blend, then the post office to pick up a parcel. It’s really great to spend some time with Hazel, especially now as she is full of life and learning to talk really quickly. She repeats anything you say!

After Sarah gets back i work through the evening. I’m very thankful to have a job that allows me to be flexible with my schedule for my family’s needs.

Here’s a shot of the two of us while under the train overpass:

2010 Automattic Meetup

8

I spent the past week in Seaside, Florida with the folks from Automattic. It was a great time! A lot of work, some play, and good eats with a great team of people. The mobile team cranked away on an iPad subscription reader which is looking really good. Throughout the week, Automatticians gave 5-20 minute ‘flash talks’ on really interesting subjects.

I did manage to get away for a kayaking trip which was excellent, as well as a fun early morning photo walk. I also found some of the ‘Truman Show’ filming locations.

Here’s some pictures from the week:

I’m out in Florida this week with my pals at Automattic. It’s the town where ‘The Truman Show’ was filmed, one of my favorite movies. I’m hoping to find some of the spots where they filmed to get some pictures! So far so good, but it is hot and humid here.
